INTRODUCTION

In March 2021, thirty songwriters, musicians, and artists from the US and Russia came together for the very first time, thanks to a collaborative program between PSV and SongwriterCamps in Los Angeles. Together with award-winning mentors, they learned the fundamentals of songwriting for the LA market, working to real-world briefs from television, cinema, advertising, and the synch industries.

Comparative analysis was conducted between Anglo-American and Russophone traditions, in order to successfully:

  • apply proven songwriting techniques from career professionals in California

  • collaborate in deliberately randomized patterns with American peers and other camp attendees

  • build new songwriting networks

  • and network with successful music industry professionals.

The briefs used for active learning requested songs for:

  • Movie Trailer. Genre: Expansive, cinematic pop

  • Gaming Trailer. Genres: Electronic/Hip-hop/Pop-rock

  • TV/Web Commercial. Client: Health Provider #1. Genre: Indie Pop/Vintage R&B

  • TV/Web Commercial. Client: Health Provider #2. Genre: ‘80s synth-pop/New wave

 Forthcoming are:

  • a resulting playback event or “listening party” to summarize goals reached and nurture ongoing partnerships

  • licensing advice from invited ASCAP / BMI speakers

  • and the creation of a shared licensing platform making sustainable living a possibility, together with new freedoms of speech across languages, traditions, and multiple time zones.
